Gum Grafting

When recession of the gingiva occurs, the body loses a natural defense against both bacterial penetration and trauma. When gum recession is a problem, gum reconstruction using grafting techniques is an option.

When there is only minor recession, some healthy gingiva often remains and protects the tooth, so that no treatment other than modifying home care practices is necessary. However, when recession reaches the mucosa, the first line of defense against bacterial penetration is lost.

In addition, gum recession often results in root sensitivity to hot and cold foods as well as an unsightly appearance of the gum and tooth. When significant, gum recession can predispose to worsening recession and expose the root surface, which is softer than enamel, leading to root caries and root gouging.

A gingival graft is designed to solve these problems. A thin piece of tissue is taken from the roof of the mouth or gently moved over from adjacent areas to provide a stable band of attached gingiva around the tooth. The gingival graft may be placed in such a way as to cover the exposed portion of the root.

The gingival graft procedure is highly predictable and results in a stable, healthy band of attached tissue around the tooth.

First class office, great experience from the minute I walked into door, won't go to anyone else. Myself, husband and two children are all patients.

Very professional and caring staff. I was extremely nervous coming in not knowing what to expect for my gum graft surgery. Upon arrival I was taken in and calmed down by one of the staff members who reassured me I would be alright. She was correct, I was in good hands. I'm now a month in since my surgery and feel like the surgery never even happened. My mouth looks incredible. Thank you staff. Highly recommended to come here for anyone needing this surgery.

This office and staff made a scary and intimidating set of procedures as easy, pleasant and un-intimidating as possible. I'm so thankful for this staff and doctor, and am honored to think that I can count them as friends, not just "my dental providers". 🙂

We love Dr. Wolf. We were referred to him by our daughter's pediatric dentist. He took excellent care of her. She was never overly frightened by the office or the gum surgery she had performed. She was sad when she found out that she didn't have to come back anymore! Her results were fantastic. We are very pleased at how comfortable and safe Dr. Wolf and his staff made her feel. We would recommend his office in a heartbeat, and feel lucky to have found such a great practice. Thank you for taking such good care of our little girl!
