If periodontal pockets are too deep to clean with routine professional care, or remain inflamed after a non-surgical procedure, periodontal surgery allows Dr. Wolf to see the problem and correct it!
After an oral sedative and local anesthetic for your comfort, he gently folds back the gum and removes the disease-causing bacteria. In some cases, irregular surfaces of the damaged bone are smoothed. This allows the gum tissue to better reattach to the tooth. In areas of severe bone loss, this procedure is done prior to bone regeneration. When completed, “dissolving” sutures are used; you will be seen in 10-14 days to remove any remaining sutures and evaluate your healing.
After your procedure, bed rest is recommended for one day and limited physical activity for 2-3 days to allow the gum to heal and minimize bleeding. You may feel sore, in the area of surgery, for a few days. Pain is not usually reported by our patients. Following post operative instructions is critical for success and for a positive experience.
Periodontal Surgery is a great option to enhance support for your teeth and to restore your bone to a healthy level. In areas of cosmetic concern; Dr. Wolf will use plastic surgical techniques to ensure the best possible outcome. Healthy tight gums, daily personal oral hygiene and regular professional maintenance are important to protect your health and smile. Our patients agree that the minor soreness and temporary sensitivity during healing are well worth their self esteem and ability to chew with their own teeth.
